Nature Activities Between Hunting Seasons | Outdoor Guide
Dec 31st 1969
Introduction
We don’t hunt for the sake of killing animals, as many misguided individuals think we do. We go because we love to connect with nature. Even when there’s nothing to shoot at, we connect with the past and build a bond with nature. That bond doesn’t go away once we’re done hunting. Here are some activities that help us stay connected with nature when it’s not hunting season.
Nature Related Activities to Try this Hunting Season
Scout the trails.
Especially right after deer season, the trails, rubs, and scrapes are still visible from the fall rut. You'll learn valuable clues about the movement patterns of the deer.
Set up wildlife cameras.
This allows you to watch the deer 24 hours a day and learn about the other animals in the area. Move the cameras around during different times of the year, as deer habits change according to seasons. Closely monitor their movement right after bow season in preparation for your hunting season.
Go shed hunting.
Not only is shed hunting fun to do with friends and family, but the shed antlers will also help provide you with valuable insight into what animals are in the area. It's also a great exercise, as shed hunting requires a lot of walking through various terrain types.
Create bedding areas.
Grab the chainsaw and do some Timber Stand Improvement or "TSI.” TSI is the practice of improving the quality of forested habitats for wildlife habitat and forest production. TSI can be one of the best habitat improvement projects you complete on your farm.
It’s important to spend your non-hunting months practicing your shooting skills and getting to know your equipment. Being prepared in both tools and mind will give you the best results from your next hunt.
